Decorating the Christmas tree and dressing the home with festive touches is all fun, but it can feel like more of a chore when it actually comes to taking your Christmas tree down and finding storage for all your decorations.

So we asked organising gurus, The Home Edit's Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, who are stars of Netflix show Get Organised with The Home Edit, about some smart ways to organise and store your Christmas decorations this year, including Christmas tree storage hacks and how to avoid your storage boxes being 'visually cluttered'.

Before you load all your decorations in storage boxes and bags, Clea and Joanna advise you to do this one thing first.

'Label everything because I find that when we go to organise people's holiday collections, they tend to buy holiday items before they’ve ever taken out their holiday items from last year, which is why everyone always accumulates so much more,' explains Clea. 'And then when you take your items out you realise you have four tree skirts! I have more tree skirts than trees!

'Before you pack away your items at the end of Christmas, take stock, take inventory, label everything so that you have ornaments, décor, pillows, throws, whatever it may be, and that way you’ll be more intentional and thoughtful moving into the next holiday season knowing what you’ll have.'

So the process essentially requires a bit of a post-Christmas declutter, or as Joanna and Clea call it, an 'edit'.

Joanna explains: 'Edit what you don’t use. If you don’t use something one year, make sure you understand why you’re not using it. Did something break? Let’s get rid of it and save your space for things you’re going to love, use or need.'

So now that's all cleared up, what storage essentials are a must for Christmas decorations?

'Stackable, airtight and lightweight storage,' says Clea. 'It’s not the prettiest of storage options. We like to get at least one consistent type so that it’s not a big grey tub over here, and one that has green handles over there – that ends up actually feeling visually cluttered.'

Clea and Joanna advise that you use your space wisely: 'Every garage, wardrobe, attic and storage space is still your home,' they emphasise.

'There is no throwaway space, you’re still paying rent or mortgage,' Joanna adds.

Another tip that we're always promoting here at House Beautiful, and this one is especially ideal for those living in small spaces, is to use vertical space.

'Really maximise your vertical space, again you want to get airtight lock-in plastic storage tubs or bins that can at least stack four high,' explains Clea. 'And of course, if you have breakable ornaments, you’ll need to get ornament inserts to go inside and hold the different pieces together.'
