Wayne Mardle hopes Gerwyn Price’s threat to boycott the PDC World Championship is just a knee jerk reaction to his disappointing quarter-final exit.
The World No.1’s hopes of winning a fourth world title were emphatically ended in the quarter-final stage by Gabriel Clemens. The German giant overcame the Welshman 5-1 at Ally Pally, despite Price’s attempts to wind up the boisterous crowd by wearing a pair of industrial grade ear protectors.
In the wake of his frustrating defeat to the former locksmith, Price appeared to threaten a complete boycott of the PDC World Championship.

Shortly after the loss, Price took to social media to vent his frustrations about the evening’s events. “So frustrating you play all year round preparing for this one tournament,” Price wrote on his Instagram story.
“So gutted I wasn’t let play but good luck everyone left in. Not sure I will ever play in this event again.” While Price is more than accustomed to playing the role of pantomime villain, very few within the sport would be happy to see the back of him at the biggest tournament of them all.

And Mardle, who fiercely criticised Price’s ear protector antics, admitted he would not like to see Mardle boycott future events. “I hope it’s just a knee jerk reaction,” Mardle said to Sky Sports.
“Wearing the ear defenders was more of a visual thing for the crowd. They’re really not, kind of, for him.
“That’s just an elaborate way of saying ‘you’re getting on my nerves now’. Mentally, he couldn’t have been that strong anyway when normally that’s his game.
“He’s one of the most mentally strong darts players I’ve ever known, let alone with the quality he possesses. Which is why he’s got to World No.1 and he’s been a world champion."
