A Tesco shopper was shocked to find that cheese in their local store had been protected with a security tag. The shopper took to TikTok to share a video showing Cathedral City cheese in protective plastic security boxes to prevent stealing.

The TikTok user shared the clip alongside a comment that read: "When the cost of living goes up..." Tesco told MyLondon that they regularly use security tags to prevent stealing and this is not a new policy, but many users were shocked to see them used for cheese.

One TikTok user wrote: "Well I never thought I'd see the day they treat cheese like razor blades." Another commented: "What is going on?! I never thought I'd see the day cheese was security protected like a frigging mobile phone!!"

Others suggested this was just used in certain areas as they had not noticed the measure in their local stores. One said: "Perhaps this is just in stores with high thefts, my Tesco doesn't have this." Another similarly said: "Must be a rough area. My Tesco doesn't do this." A third similarly said: "Mine doesn't do this, where is this Tesco."

Some TikTok users were more shocked to see the price of the cheese that was in the security box which cost £4.15. One person commented: "£4.15 for cheese!!! Jesus." Another said: "How families on low incomes can live now is sad. £4.50 for a block of cheese the same product that was so cheap was given as rations in WW2."

Interestingly it appears that only the Cathedral City cheese was protected in this way as many other products around it were free of security protection. Tesco also said they could not provide further details as it was unclear which store the security boxes were in.
